Acetylcysteine is a mucolytic. Mucolytic activity is mediated by a reduction in bronchial mucus viscosity. It can be explained by a depolymerization with opening of the disulfide bridges between the macromolecules. In addition, acetylcysteine is a precursor of glutathione. Acetylcysteine is a derivative of cysteine, a naturally occurring amino acid that is a substrate during glutathione synthesis in the body. Acetylcysteine is likely to normalize glutathione depletion. Acetylcysteine is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and distributed throughout the body.
